Hi, I’m Teresa Svoboda with Pick of the Crop. An awesomely diverse plant, cannabis consists of hundreds of healing chemical compounds believed to have positive health effects. Cannabis is a living, breathing plant that contains multiple active ingredients and expresses different characteristics that have aided people around the world since 2,700 BC. Today, we’re going to cover some of the plant’s complexities by talking about strains known in phytomedicine as chemovars.

Purple Haze, Candy Glue, Jungle Rec. You may have guessed that these are some cannabis strains. While strain names range from the whimsical to the profound, our medicine is named for the history of its evolution and legitimate botanical distinctions. Patients acquainted with cannabis often refer to two species of the plant, Sativa and Indica, with expectations of certain effects. What we know is that the biochemical profile and format used determine expected results. Let’s take a look at 1937 favorite, Ultimate Purple.

Upon opening the jar, one can observe intensely frosted flower with muted pink and purple hues within enticingly sweet smell. Ultimate Purple genetics are bred in the USA and this poly-hybrid, a cross of two hybrid parents, consists of four chemovars. The Purps, Purple Urkle, Granddaddy Purple, and Purple Kush.

What does this all mean to a medical patient? The key to finding the right chemical strain for your symptoms may very well lie on certain species, but we also must look at the medicines’ label. While we know that this strain indicates an Indica hybrid, patients would be wise to consider potency and terpenes. The sweet aroma I mentioned before may very well be the reason one may find this strain mentally and physically relaxing. Which loops us back to the diversity and complexity of this magnificent plant medicine.
