With over 500 active compounds found in cannabis plants, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and many others, there are many nuanced ways any particular strain may impart its therapeutic and experiential benefits.

From the “head high” that tames stress or boosts mood for many, to the relaxing “body high” that soothes discomfort and may support falling asleep—and every in between—there are near infinite ways for these chemical constituents to come together.

One that’s renowned for blending the mental and physical experience of cannabis, Kush N Cheese, is a pungent and savory strain that has a lot to offer.

Effects, Cannabinoids, and Genetics

At Vireo Health, we choose different strains based on their effects on specific symptoms and conditions ranging from chronic pain to insomnia, peripheral neuropathy, and PTSD, among others. And as its many fans have found for themselves, the Kush N Cheese strain offers a wide variety of potential therapeutic benefits.

That’s in part because like many other strains of cannabis, Kush N Cheese is a hybrid. Genetically speaking, this means that it has been bred from a combination of indica and sativa strains. While indicas are often associated with a powerfully relaxing “body high” that can help melt away aches and physical pain, sativas are associated with cerebral stimulation and a euphoric uplift.

And as a hybrid, the Kush N Cheese strain primarily finds use for taming physical complaints such as aching muscles and joints. But because of its cerebral uplift, many users report it’s useful against symptoms of stress and anxiety. Patients also report that its benefits are long lasting.

As with all cannabis strains, much of the Kush N Cheese strain’s effects come from its predominant cannabinoid THC—often considered the “major active ingredient” in the cannabis plant. As we’ve shared before, THC imparts a wide array of potential medical benefits. As such, Kush N Cheese contains a moderate to high amount of this potent compound—roughly 20%—so it should be approached with moderation. Why? An excess of THC can actually stimulate symptoms of anxiety rather than diminishing them.

What about CBD, the “second cannabinoid”? Kush N Cheese contains little to none, so if you’re looking for the benefits of CBD consider our selection of CBD-rich Vireo Spectrum™ Indigo and Blue products.

Where does the Kush N Cheese strain come from? This hybrid strain’s “parents” include:

  • Emerald OG: First developed by California Breeders Association, this indica-dominant hybrid is known both for its mild floral and melon flavors as well as a deeply relaxing experience that has been used for tackling discomfort and sleeplessness.
  • UK Cheese: Another hybrid strain, this pungently aromatic strain—hence the name—is noted for its energizing, euphoric effects that help many people boost mood and focus.

Terpenes, Aromas, and Flavors

As one might expect, Kush N Cheese strain gets its name from its pungent flavor and aroma. Many users pick up on the scents of aged cheese, Diesel fuel, and hints of citrus. As with all strains of cannabis, this is thanks in large part to its terpene profile. Terpenes are a large and diverse family of compounds often described as the “essential oils” in cannabis. In Kush N Cheese, dominant terpenes include:

  • Terpinolene: A complex and layered terpene that’s also found in lilacs, nutmeg and apples
  • β-Caryophyllene: A common terpene in cannabis, caryophyllene offers a peppery and spicy kick
  • Limonene: A fresh and citrusy terpene that is also common to cannabis, and also found in citrus fruits
  • α-Pinene: A terpene you’ll associate with a pine forest, pinene is both invigorating and fresh

Besides imparting a strain’s characteristic flavors, a strain’s terpene profile is believed to impart specific therapeutic benefits, as supported by a number of clinical studies. In the Kush N Cheese strain, caryophyllene has been shown to impart anxiolytic (anxiety-fighting) effects, while also acting as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Kush N Cheese’s mood-boosting effect may be due in part to the citrusy terpene limonene, while pinene may offer a variety of neuroprotective benefits.

Growing the Kush N Cheese Strain

If you’re a new cultivator, the Kush N Cheese strain may be a great choice for an easy growing experience. For one thing, the life cycle is relatively short, with flowering typically occurring around 55 – 60 days. And for another, the strain does well in a wide variety of mediums. When tended carefully, these plants—which can reach heights of nine feet when grown out-of-doors—can produce an impressive yield of dense, heavy flowers with a thick coating of resin.
