Here at Vireo Health, we tend to focus on the medical benefits of cannabis plant’s, from reducing anxiety to addressing chronic pain to taming insomnia

But as you’re probably aware, there are plenty of other reasons that people turn to cannabis, such as inspiring a creative spark with a touch of euphoric bliss. If that sounds appealing, the Jelly Rancher strain should be right up your alley.

Genetics, Effects, and Cannabinoids

A citrus and berry-scented powerhouse, Jelly Rancher—sometimes known as “Hella Jelly”—is a strain to remember. On top of these delightfully sweet flavors and aromas, Jelly Rancher flower is beloved by many medical cannabis patients for its ability to uplift mood and boost focus.

Most of these effects come courtesy of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. You can think of cannabinoids as the major “active ingredients” in the cannabis plant. THC, in addition to imparting the bulk of the cannabis plant’s intoxicating “high,” has been shown to potentially help address pain as well as imparting other benefits.

The Jelly Rancher strain typically contains a fairly healthy percentage of THC, testing out in the 20% – 28% range, meaning it is a fairly potent strain. If you’re new to cannabis, remember that a little can go a long way!

You’ve also probably heard or read about CBD—the non-intoxicating “second cannabinoid” associated with a number of medical benefits. Be aware that Jelly Rancher contains only minimal amounts, so if you’re looking for the benefits of CBD consider our selection of CBD-rich Vireo Spectrum™ Indigo and Blue products.

Another question we commonly get about Jelly Rancher: Is it a sativa or indica strain? We’ve written about the names “indica” and “sativa” before, and how they’ve been used for several hundred years to describe different types of cannabis. While some critics feel they’re no longer technically accurate, here at Vireo Health, we believe these classifications offer value to our customers by helping them predict the effects of a given strain. Here’s how it works.

Classic indica strains are typically associated with a powerfully relaxing “body high” that can help melt away aches, pain, and stress. In comparison, sativa strains tend to be associated with cerebral stimulation and a noted euphoric uplift. And as we referenced earlier, this euphoria is a major reason the Jelly Rancher strain has won so much acclaim.

Much of this comes down to genetics. According to the Humboldt Seed Company, which first bred the Jelly Rancher strain, its “parent strains” include:

  • Very Cherry: Tart and distinctly cherry like on the nose, this hybrid strain is beloved for its ability to inspire a highly motivated, creative burst. ANd like the Glookies strain, Very Cherry is noteworthy for containing CBG, a cannabinoid which studies suggest may help treat neurodegenerative and gut diseases.
  • Notorious THC: Despite the foreboding name, Notorious is actually quite approachable due to its moderate (~19%) THC content. Like its progeny Jelly Rancher, it won fans for its ability to help ease chronic discomfort and inspire a refreshing burst of euphoria.

Terpenes, Aromas, and Flavors

As with all strains of cannabis, those aromas and flavors of Jelly Rancher or “Hella Jelly” come mainly from its terpene profile, which includes:

  • β-Myrcene: Known for its earthy, fruity and clove like flavor and aroma
  • Trans-Caryophyllene: Known for its signature peppery and spicy scent and flavor
  • β-Pinene: Known for the refreshing, sweet and spicy scent you’d associate with pine trees
  • Linalool: Most often associated with lavender, linalool brings a floral, spicy and woodsy addition to the strain

If you’ve visited our cannabis blog in the past, you probably know that terpenes are the “essential oils” found in cannabis as well as countless other natural products such as trees and even some insects and animals. In the case of the Jelly Rancher strain, the dominant flavors are often described as being sweet and berry-like—think fresh strawberries or ripe blackberries—with an undertone of bright-tasting citrus.

Beyond their crucial role in giving different cannabis strains their distinctive flavors and aromas, terpenes impart some surprising medical benefits as well. The Jelly Rancher strain is high in myrcene, a terpene that’s been shown to have potential analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anxiolytic (or anxiety-reducing) effects. And caryophyllene, another dominant terpene in the Jelly strain, has been shown to be a natural anti-inflammatory.

Growing the Jelly Rancher Strain

Ready to try growing Jelly Rancher? According to many cultivators it’s a great strain for novice growers. Flowering time is a rapid 45 days, and the plants are less reliant on fertilizers or other inputs as compared to other more challenging strains. The plants are reasonably tolerant of less-than-optimal growing conditions, and should reward you with a wealth of pale green flowers.
