Terpenes, Flavors and Aromas

Many fans report that this indica-dominant strain is notably delicious, combining flavors of sweet spice, diesel, and a distinctive nutty aroma. Glookies derives those memorable flavors from a terpene profile which includes:

  • β-Caryophyllene: Known for its signature peppery and spicy scent and flavor
  • Limonene: Known for its zippy flavor and aroma, limonene offers a citrusy and fresh kick
  • α-Pinene: Known for the refreshing, sweet and spicy scent you’d associate with pine trees
  • β-Myrcene: Known for its earthy, fruity and clove like flavor and aroma

Terpenes, of course, are the “essential oils” found in cannabis as well as countless other natural products. The largest and most diverse group of natural compounds on earth, terpenes are found in many other plants, even some insects and animals. But in addition to giving cannabis strains their distinctive flavors and aromas, terpenes have been shown to impart noteworthy medical benefits as well.

For instance, studies suggest that Caryophyllene, the Glookie strain’s dominant terpene, is a natural anti-inflammatory, as are cannabinoids such as THC and CBD

Effects, Genetics and Cannabinoids

As we’ve written previously, the names “indica” and “sativa” have been used for centuries when it comes to cannabis. And while some argue that they’re no longer technically accurate, here at Vireo Health we feel these labels still offer value to our customers.

How? Classic indica strains are usually associated with a powerfully relaxing “body high” that can help melt away aches, pain, and stress. Sativa strains, on the other hand, are associated with cerebral stimulation and euphoric uplift. Some people refer to this phenomenon as a “head high,” because it can help spur creativity. And as we referenced earlier, creative spark is a major reason people turn to the Glookies strain.

When it comes to genetics, Glookie’s “parent strains” include:

  • Original Glue (aka Gorilla Glue #4): Infamous for its ability to knock you flat on your back and leave you feeling stuck to the couch (or the floor), this high-THC (up to 28%) hybrid strain offers a heavy-handed hit of relaxation. Like the Glookie strain, Gorilla Glue is noteworthy for its caryophyllene-dominant flavor and aroma.
  • Girl Scout Cookies (aka GSC): A now legendary cannabis strain, Girl Scout Cookies is a multiple award winner known for its dessert-like aromatic profile and ability to provide a euphoric wave of relaxation. Highly psychoactive, it’s won a legion of fans among medical patients for its ability to soothe a variety of symptoms.

Though Glookies is an indica-leaning hybrid, its effects tend to fall into what we’d generally consider “sativa-like” territory: Cerebral uplift, creative inspiration, and motivation. This underscores that while genetic lineage does play a role in any particular plant’s effects, several other variables (such as terpenes) play a part in creating the concert of effects a person may experience.

The cannabinoids found in cannabis can be thought of as the major “active ingredients” of the plant, and they’re produced and secreted by the same glands that produce terpenes. THC, of course, is the cannabinoid most associated with the cannabis plant’s intoxicating “high,” and the Glookies strain contains a healthy share of it: Roughly 19% – 25%. This makes it a potent strain that shouldn’t be underestimated.

The Glookie strain doesn’t contain any CBD—the non-intoxicating “second cannabinoid” associated with a number of medical benefits. However, it typically contains roughly 1% CBG, a cannabinoid that may help treat neurodegenerative and gut diseases. If you’re looking for the benefits of CBD consider our selection of CBD-rich Vireo Spectrum™ Indigo and Blue products.

Growing the Glookies Strain

If you’re interested in trying your hand at growing the Glookie strain and have a bit of prior experience, you’ll be rewarded by outstanding yields. These plants grow to be fairly large, both indoors and out and may benefit from training techniques such as Screen of Green (SCRoG) or trellissing during flower.

These plants tend to be reasonably resistant to mold and tolerant of less-than-optimal growing conditions, with indoor flowering times for Glookies range between 9-10 weeks, while outdoor growers can harvest at the start of October. Some cultivators report yields of 800g / 28 oz per square meter indoors, and a very robust 2,000g – 3,000g / 70 oz – 105 oz per plant outdoors.
