If you know anything about cannabis terpenes, you know that the cannabis world contains a nearly limitless array of flavors, aromas, and medical effects. Bubblegum Runtz, sometimes also known as “Bubble Gum Runtz” or “Bubble Runtz,” is a perfect example.
Fruity, fun, euphoric and uplifting, Bubblegum Runtz is a very special strain indeed. Delivering a rush of uplifting creativity along with a lasting euphoria, this strain is as famous for its sweet candy-like flavor as its ability to help beat back the negative sensations associated with chronic pain and anxiety.
If you’re ready to learn about a sweet and fruity taste sensation, you’re in the right place!
Terpenes, Flavors and Aromas
Whether you’re looking for relief of symptoms such as anxiety or chronic pain or seeking the creative spark associated with certain strains of cannabis, there’s a lot to recommend Bubblegum Runtz.
But as far as we’re concerned, one of the top reasons to try this hybrid strain is for its famous flavor. The result of its genetic forebears—a topic we’ll dive deeper into in just a moment—the Bubblegum Runtz strain is a fruity-tasting powerhouse.
Combining notably sweet bubblegum aromas with blueberry and lemon notes, Bubblegum Runtz derives those memorable flavors from a terpene profile which includes such prominent players as:
- Trans-Caryophyllene: Known for its signature peppery and spicy scent and flavor
- Limonene: Known for its zippy flavor and aroma, limonene offers a citrusy and fresh kick
- β-Myrcene: Known for its earthy, fruity and clove like flavor and aroma
- Carene: A less commonly known terpene, carene brings subtle citrus and woodsy notes to Bubble Runtz
We’ve written about terpenes before. They’re the “essential oils” found in cannabis, and they lend different cannabis strains their distinctive flavors and aromas. Terpenes aren’t just exclusive to cannabis, either. The largest and most diverse group of natural compounds on earth, they’re found in many other plants, even some insects and animals.
If Bubblegum Runtz delivers a powerfully sweet and fruity aroma, it lacks the “dank” characteristic common to many strains, such as those carrying the “OG” lineage. This gives Bubblegum Runtz a less “marijuana-like” smell than some other strains, which some consumers find to be a point in its favor.
Genetics, Effects and Cannabinoids
The names “indica” and “sativa” have a long history in the world of cannabis. And even if they’re not strictly accurate on the technical level, at Vireo Health we feel they offer value to our customers.
What’s the difference between the two? Indica plants are generally associated with a powerfully relaxing “body high.” Sativa strains, on the other hand, typically impart a cerebrally stimulating “head high” that can help spur creativity. Examining at Bubblegum Runtz genetics, we see that it tends towards its indica genetics.
Its “parent strains” include:
- Bubblegum: An indica-leaning (80%) hybrid strain, this strain is the source of Bubblegum Runtz’s notably sweet flavor. And like Bubblegum Runtz, Bubblegum is renowned for its ability to but through stress, tension, and anxiety.
- Runtz: With a roughly even split between indica and sativa genetics, this strain delivers a calming sense of lift with a powerful sedation that can veer into “couch-lock.” It’s won fame for its ability to tamp down on insomnia, chronic pain, and appetite loss, among other symptoms.
Thanks to this fun and fruity cross, Bubblegum Runtz serves up the essence of sweet juicy berries balanced by a lemony tart undertone, accompanied by an uplifting sense of enjoyment and pronounced body-based relaxation.
Then there’s the topic of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. Produced and secreted by the same glands that produce terpenes, the cannabinoids can be thought of as the major “active ingredients” in cannabis. THC, of course, is the cannabinoid most associated with the cannabis plant’s intoxicating “high.”
Where does Bubblegum Runtz fall in the spectrum? With a THC content that typically falls in the 22% – 24% range, it’s fairly potent and thus shouldn’t be approached lightly. When it comes to CBD—the “second cannabinoid”—the Bubblegum Runtz strain contains none. So if you’re looking to reduce anxiety or soothe aches and pains without any intoxicating effects, Bubblegum Runtz may not be the strain for you.
Growing the Bubblegum Runtz Strain
When it comes to growing Bubblegum Runtz for yourself, if you put in the time and effort to nurture these plants you’ll be rewarded by solid yields. These plants grow to be medium to large in size, producing light green frosty buds, and may benefit from training techniques such as Screen of Green (SCRoG). They do best in environments that are reasonably warm (around 70-80°F) and moderately humid (around 50-60%).
Indoor flowering times for Bubblegum Runtz range between 9-10 weeks, while outdoor growers can harvest around mid-October. Some cultivators report yields of 600g / 21 oz per square meter indoors, and about 1,500g / 70 oz – 105 oz per plant outdoors.
