This month marks the fifth anniversary of Minnesota Medical Solutions! We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and are so incredibly thankful to all our patients and team members for their support over these last five years.
As we look towards the years ahead, we will continue to advocate to make medical cannabis more accessible and more affordable for every Minnesotan (and patients nationwide!) while continuing to innovate and create new lines of medical cannabis products and new ways for this amazing plant to help people.

MinnMed was founded on the principle of providing high quality care and treatment to patients in need. Our Founder and CEO, Dr. Kyle Kingsley was inspired to start MinnMed after meeting a Gulf War veteran in a Minnesota emergency room who suffered a gunshot wound in combat resulting in a spinal cord injury. After being prescribed large amounts of opiates with numerous adverse side effects, the veteran decided to try medical cannabis. Soon after the switch, he experienced significant relief from his symptoms with little to no side effects and was able to return to his everyday life pain free. Because of medical cannabis, thousands of Minnesotans, including this veteran, have been able to find relief and thousands of lives have been changed forever.
Since then, MinnMed has grown into Vireo Health, one of the nation’s largest MSOs operating 14 dispensaries in seven states. We remain physician-led, patient-focused while investing heavily in science to develop new ways for cannabis to help more patients and partnering with medical cannabis research organizations and educational institutions to further the understanding, and acceptance, of cannabis as medicine.
Our patients continue to inspire us to continue growing and innovating every single day, including Alec Kelsey and his mother Kim Kelsey, who have been leaders in the fight for access to medical cannabis. Five years ago, Alec was 24 years old and suffering from epilepsy, experiencing thousands of seizures throughout his life. But that didn’t stop Alec and Kim from spending countless hours lobbying the Minnesota State Legislature to legalize medical cannabis. Alec and his mother, among other patients and advocates that we are so grateful for as well, were a huge reason why the Minnesota State Legislature eventually legalized medical cannabis.
Their story and their perseverance helped make medical cannabis a reality in our State. When we opened our doors in Minneapolis for the first time in July 2015, Alec’s mother was waiting right outside as we opened in the early hours of the morning to serve our first patients. We are incredibly proud and honored to have Alec as our first patient at MinnMed! We were happy to hear from Kim that since he started receiving treatment with medical cannabis, Alec’s underlying seizure activity has virtually stopped. He still has breakthrough life threatening tonic clonic seizures but with quicker recovery, and his quality of life has vastly improved.
