The Girl Crush strain is a cannabis variety with a real backstory! Descending from Bad Girl strain and cannabis superstar Biscotti, Girl Crush is a potent sativa-leaning hybrid known for imparting cerebral stimulation and spark. Whether you’re looking to supercharge your creativity or tame the symptoms of stress or anxiety, you may find yourself crushing out on the Girl Crush strain.

Girl Crush’s Genetics, Cannabinoids, and Effects

Where did this stellar strain come from? As the original cultivator, Twenty 20, is located in California’s lush Mendocino County, you might also see this strain referred to as the “Mendocino Girl Crush” strain. Thanks to its climate and long tradition of cannabis cultivation, Mendocino is regarded as one of the best places to grow in California. Girl Crush also comes from impressive lineage, and its “parent strains” include:

  • Bad Girl: A potent indica-dominant strain, Bad Girl can induce calm and sedation, making it a good choice for evening or nighttime use when you can kick back and relax. Besides those full-body subjective effects, you may find yourself captivated by the flower’s rich coffee, fuel, and Kush-like aromatics.
  • Biscotti: A true superstar of the cannabis world, Biscotti—not to be confused with its offspring the White Biscotti strain—is known for a cerebral, buzzy high that will make you feel euphoric, relaxed, and ready to create. Be forewarned: Less can be more with this strain, as the effects can creep up on you!

Like all cannabis strains, Girl Crush interfaces with our bodies and minds via cannabinoids, a family of natural compounds that includes THC and CBD. In addition to imparting most of the euphoric “high” cannabis is known for, THC is responsible for other benefits, including helping reduce pain and inflammation

The strain contains an average of 25% THC, making it fairly potent. Keep this in mind if you’re using it to tame anxiety. Why? As clinical studies (and a great deal of anecdotal evidence) suggest, too much THC tends to stimulate anxiety instead of diminishing it.

In addition, Girl Crush may offer some energetic and stimulating effects. We’ve written about the terms “indica” and “sativa” before, and how they correlate to different types of cannabis and their effects. While classic indica strains are usually associated with a powerfully relaxing “body high,” sativa and sativa-dominant strains tend to be associated with cerebral stimulation and a noted euphoric uplift. And as an sativa-dominant hybrid, Girl Crush strain may boost mood and relieve stress while inspiring creativity and focus.

Terpenes, Aromas, and Flavors

On top of those energizing cerebral effects, Girl Crush is noted for its unusual flavors and aromatics: fuel, licorice, kerosene, and fennel. As with all strains, this profile is largely due to its terpene lineup, which includes:

  • Limonene: You’ll find this zippy terpene in lemons, and all citrus fruits, in addition to brining a fresh and uplifting fragrance and flavor to Girl Crush
  • Trans-Caryophyllene: This terpene is know for its peppery kick, present in black pepper, basil and other complex profiles where it adds layer and nuance
  • β-Myrcene: One of the most abundant terpenes in cannabis, myrcene offers a musky, earthy and spicy combination to Girl Crush
  • α-Humulene: As a terpene we commonly associate with hops, humulene brings earthy, woody, and herbal notes

As we’ve discussed elsewhere, terpenes are the “essential oils” found in cannabis as well as countless other natural sources such as trees, plants, and spices, among many other products. In cannabis, they’ve historically been associated with flavors and aromas. But as a growing body of clinical research suggests, terpenes impart important medical benefits as well.

Myrcene, for instance, has been shown to have potential analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anxiolytic (or anxiety-reducing) effects. And caryophyllene is a peppery-scented terpene that’s been shown to impart anxiolytic, or anxiety-fighting effects.

Growing the Girl Crush Strain

According to cultivators, the Girl Crush strain is reasonably easy to grow, and will reward careful gardeners with a beautiful display of purple-streaked flower. Whether grown indoors, outside, or in a greenhouse, the flowering time is roughly 64 to 74 days days. Provided they exercise reasonable care, growers can expect solid yields from this fan favorite.
