Genetics: What Cannabis Strain Is Blueberry?

Blueberry is a cult-classic strain originally created by legendary cannabis breeder DJ Short. The original blueberry strain is believed to have originated sometime in the 70s or 80s from a cross between an Afghan indica and a Thai and/or Purple Thai sativa. Whatever the final cross was, it’s clear that these exotic landrace genetics have blessed blueberry with a blend of effects and flavors that people just can’t get enough of.

So is the blueberry strain indica or sativa? Thanks to its sativa and indica lineage, Blueberry is an indica-dominant hybrid cannabis strain. It’s also an award-winner, having picked up the coveted 2000 High Times Cannabis Cup for Best Indica. Today, there are several different Blueberry phenotypes out there and a host of different hybrids featuring blueberry marijuana genetics like Blue Cheese, White Berry, and Blue Dream.

Blueberry Strain Effects

There’s a lot to like when it comes to blueberry’s effects profile. Blueberry usually produces a heavy feeling of full-body relaxation and euphoria, offering relief to a busy mind with feelings of peace and ease. These relaxing properties give it both medical and recreational appeal. Blueberry is best left for the evening or nighttime, but don’t expect it to put you to sleep right away.

Blueberry strain effects are potent, yet not always overly sedating, making it a great alternative to other potent indicas that may be more likely to produce that notorious ‘couch-lock’ effect. Instead, the blueberry marijuana strain produces an encompassing whole-body experience that delivers a consistent euphoria throughout both body and mind.

For some, blueberry makes them feel sleepy and hungry. Some of the most commonly reported side effects include dry mouth, dry eyes, and dizziness. Its hazy and euphoric mental effects have also been known to give way to introspective mind states that can make it hard to focus or concentrate.

Blueberry Strain THC Level

These impressive effects are supported by considerable THC levels. What kind of blueberry strain THC levels can you expect? As always, it depends on the particular batch of flower. Blueberry can hover around the 20% mark if grown well, and may climb to the 23%-24% range under optimal growing conditions.

Blueberry Strain Aroma

As you can probably guess from its name, this strain features a berry-like aroma reminiscent of fresh blueberries. Blueberry’s terpene profile commonly includes terpenes like myrcene, caryophyllene, pinene, and humulene which come together to create its unique aroma and flavor profile. Some have described blueberry’s aroma as being both sweet and tart with noticeable hints of diesel.

Blueberry Strain Appearance

Blueberry’s forest green buds are small and tightly packed with beautiful orange hairs and frosty trichomes. If grown in colder climates, these sticky buds may even feature hues of deep purple and sometimes even red.

Growing the Blueberry Cannabis Strain

This strain is relatively easy to grow, even for beginners. As long as it has the space it needs, Blueberry can achieve considerable yields both indoors and outdoors. Being an indica, these plants are relatively short and bushy, usually not exceeding 3.5 feet in height. However, they’ve been known to grow extra wide so they may require a bit more space than the average indica.

Blueberry has a relatively quick flowering time of between 7–9 weeks, with buds sometimes appearing in just a couple of months. It is said to thrive at temperatures of between 65-80℉, but it’s been noted for being surprisingly resistant to the cold and it may be able to withstand colder temperatures for short stretches of time.

Blueberry plants can sometimes grow a little asymmetrically and looka little bit off, but rest assured that the buds they produce are top-notch and well worth the effort. Blueberry is known to be a moderate to heavy yielder and will certainly reward you for taking good care of it. It’s not unheard of for a really well-grown plant to produce over 20 ounces of fresh buds and possibly even more, especially if grown outdoors.

For a good harvest, it’s important to pay special attention to nutrient intake and to consider using some training techniques. Blueberry is known to thrive with high nitrogen levels and may benefit from nutrient-rich waste products like worm castings and even bat guano. Additionally, regularly topping and pruning your blueberry plant will keep it growing short, neat, and healthy.
